How Do You Wear A Hat So That It Looks Good?
An easy-to-follow informative guide on how to get you and your hat to look it best, a text and pictorial guide.
This is the question that is asked either out loud or internally so often, I hope to give you a brief, but informative answer…..
Historically hats were worn to the right, as when ladies were accompanied by a gentleman, they would be on his left, by wearing a hat to the right the hat would not obstruct a lady’s face. This tradition is generally not applied any more, most chose which way to wear their hat based on the side of their hair parting is or simply, the side that feels more comfortable.
I myself do like wearing my hat or fascinator to the left! (For the purposes of this guide I have gone for the traditional right).
How you place your hat/fascinator on your head, can make or break how the hat looks, I have used Alysa for the photos to display pictorially, how not to and then a simple step by step, guide on how to wear your headwear so that it looks great.

What do you think of this option? Not a good look ….. too much going on around the face, yes, we all love our locks, but don’t over crowd your face.

My first tip for wearing a hat: Don’t combine the two H’s, hair or hat. We know you are wearing a hat, so pin up the hair
Your head is now hat ready, let’s put the hat back on.
Still, not a good look, the easiest way to place your hat perfectly on your head, is to use the two-finger guide, please do not be insulted, read on.
Place the index and middle finger together and place them at the top of your eyebrow, on the side you want to wear your hat / fascinator.
Move the headpiece to the side of the head, lining it up so that the bottom edge, sits the top of the two fingers, above the eyebrow.
Your hat is now positioned at an angle on your head, and you are all set for the wedding, races, barmitvah, church or special occasion you are attending and looking and feeling great 😊.
My final tip: If you are enjoying the services of a milliner and purchasing directly from them whether it be a ready-to-wear hat/fascinator or a bespoke / custom order. Ask the milliner to position the hat on you and take a photo to reference when wearing it. To request a consultation either in person or via zoom, telephone me on:07938515888 or send an email to cheryl@millinerybycherylcizek.co.uk or use the contact form on my website.
P.S There are always exceptions to the rule Neru from my Catch the Light collection was inspired by Indian, art and culture, the central beading emulates the Bindi worn on the center of the forehead in between the eyebrows.
Happy Hat wearing
Cheryl
